Holly Black is the best selling author of many books for middle school students including The Spiderwick Chronicles, Doll Bones, and co-author (with Cassandra Clare) of The Iron Trial and The Copper Gauntlet, the first two books from the brand-new Magisterium series. Hollyburn students and Teacher Librarian, Ms. Gratton snapped up so many copies of the Iron Trial and Copper Gauntlet (released just last week) that Kidsbooks was swamped, and Holly got a hand cramp. Ms. Gratton had to relinquish her copies to students with a promise from Kidsbooks that they had many more at the Edgemont location.
Hollyburn students peppered Ms. Black with questions about characters from her books and her own curiously creative life. Our students were obviously well versed in Ms. Black’s novels, as we were making connections between sagas she was telling us from her own life, and the stories she has written in her books.
Hollyburn School would like to thank West Vancouver Memorial Youth Librarian, Shannon Orziny for organizing this spectacular event, which packed Welsh Hall on an otherwise quiet Monday afternoon. (The regular clientele gathered around the computer terminals outside the Hall doors had no idea who the blue-haired celebrity was, and why so many kids were packed inside the room for over an hour.)
Holly may write about magic, fairies, and ghosts, but in real life she is very down to earth. She owns a cat, drinks lots of coffee, and has a cool husband who used to play with Star Wars characters.
